TAPKESHWAR MAHADEV TEMPLE - DEHRADUN (UTTRAKHAND)




Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple located on the bank of Asan River in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand India. It a famous Lord Shiva Temple known to have oldest shivling in the cave, Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located at 6.5km from Dehradun City. As the name suggests Tapkeshwar means as water droplets continuosly drops on the shivling hence it is named as Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple. This cave was once the abode of Famous Guru Dronacharya and hence it also known as Drona Cave.


Cool Sulphur Springs are also here available for pilgrims to take a bath in before they enter the main temple. Water trinckles from the ceiling continuously on the Shivling makes it an interesting Spectacle to watch.

MYTHOLOGY OF TAPKESHWAR MAHADEV TEMPLE


A widespread legend is popular about the emergence of the Tapkeshwar Temple.
It is said that Ashwathama, the son of Dhronacharya, was born inside the cave however his mother didn't have enough milk to be able to feed her newborn. Ashwathama was wise beyond his years and he prayed to Lord Shiva to grant him some milk to satiate his hunger. Being the Lord Shiva granted the wish of the newborn for milk to suffice his hunger. Since then a Shiva linga has been established there which is said to grant the wishes of all those who visit the temple seeking the lord's blessings.


The Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is an old age temple and has a rustic charm to it. The river adds to the beauty of the temple.

The Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is established between two hills while the main santum is contained within the bounds of naturally occurring cave. The architecture itself pertains to typical Hindu Style and is a humble edifice with a simple and small fence.

This pretty cave temple located in the cantonment area of Garhi in the heart of the city is a very sacred and revered temple, which attract thousands of tourists and devotees.

The Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located at a distance of about 6.5 km away from the city centre. Nearest Railway station is Dehradun Railway Station at a distance of about 7 kms and nearest Airport is Jolly Grant Airport at a distance of 32 km.

3. Har Ki Doon Valley - Situated at an altitude of about more than 3500 meter this place is famous among adventure seekers.

4. Zonal Anthropological Museum - It was established by Anthropological Society of India in 1971 enchanting place for history and culture ethusiasts.
