ATAL TUNNEL - ROHTANG,MANALI (HIMACHAL PRADESH)


Atal Tunnel Also Known As Rohtang Tunnel is a highway tunnel built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh. The 9km long Tunnel Bypasses the Rohtang Pass on the Leh-Manali Highway. Provides all weather connectivity to the Lahaul Spiti Valley , reduces travelling distance by 47km which is about 4 hours. Facilitating two-way traffic , it is designed to cater upto around 3,000 vehicles per day in any weather conditions.
Maximum vehicle speed of 80km per hour inside the tunnel. 

Another most crucial function of this tunnel is to help India defend its northern border, especially now that the Chinese infiltration has been increasing over the last couple of years. By making these otherwise inaccessible regions more accessible, India will now be able to mobilize the defence forces more easily than before.

Atal Tunnel Is Also The World's Longest Tunnel At A Altitude Of Over 10,000 Feet.

Atal Tunnel is named after the Former Prime Minister Of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. A Traveller now reaches the South Portal Of Atal Tunnel From Manali , covers a distance of 24.4 km in about 45 minutes, goes through the 9.02 km long Tunnel in about 15 minutes , and reaches Keylong which is 37km away in about 60 minutes.

Moreover, the tunnel bypasses most of the sites that were prone to road blockades , avalanches and traffic snarls.

It Was Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 3 October 2020.
Operator is BRO ( Border Road Organisation ) , 
Traffic Allowed  Only Motor Vehicle , Number Of Lanes Is 2 , Operating Speed Is about 40-60km/hr , Width is about 10 meters.

ADVANTAGES OF ATAL TUNNEL AT ROHTANG

• The Rohtang Pass receives heavy snowfall and Blizzard during the winter months and is open for road traffic for only 4-6 month in a year. The tunnel will keep the highway open during the winter as well.

• The 117 km distance from Manali to Keylong on the other side of Rohtang Pass is usually covered by vehicles in about 5-6 hours without counting the long hours of traffic jams on the hilly route. The same distance would now be covered in less than half an hour through the tunnel and without traffic snarls.

• This route will be vital to feed military supplies into military sub-sectors in the west facing Aksai Chin and the Siachen Glacier.
