JALLIANWALA BAGH - AMRITSAR (PUNJAB)



Jallianwala Bagh is a historical garden and memorial of national importance close to the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab. Preserved in the memory of those wounded and killed in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that occurred on this site on April 13, 1919. Spread across 7 acre of land, Jallianwala Bagh is associated with one of the saddest days in Indian History. 

A number of structure are present inside the premises which resound of the atrocities that occurred here. These include a wall which still beats the marks of the bullets that were hurled blindly at the civilian and a well in which many people jumped to save themselves from the onslaught of the bullets. It is estimated that over a 1000 Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs lost their lives in this brutal assault. 





Established by the Government of India in 1051, the Massacre memorial was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 13th April 1961.

This place is visited by a large number of tourists is order to pay respect. This place is filled with history and various structures out there must should be visit by those who are historic lovers. One should maintain the decorum of the place. 

JALLIANWALA BAGH WELL AND WALL

There are two structures reminder of our Predecessor to build an independent India. The first is the wall towards the end of the park, which is still riddled with the marks of upto 36 bullets that were fired at the crowd. The second is wall situated near the entrance of the park was where many people attending the meeting had jumped in order to dodge the bullets.





JALLIANWALA BAGH MASSACRE

On April of 1919, General Dyer arrived in Amritsar and occupied the city under his rule as the civil administration under miles lrving had come to a halt. Suspecting a revolt, General Dyer announced a ban on meeting and convention by the people but this information was not widely propagated.

On 13th April, 1919 a peaceful gathering of people convened in the Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. Upon getting the first information about the assembly, General Dyer marched towards the Bagh with a battalion. Dyer and the troops ascended a raised platform in the garden and announced indiscriminate and unprovoked firing on thousands of nonviolent and unarmed Indians.

HOW TO REACH

Jallianwala Bagh is located in close vicinity of Golden Temple in Amritsar, at a distance of 1.5 kilometres only. You can take a short walk here from the temple itself. You can easily reach the park via autorickshaw, taxi or bus.

3. Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum - This is museum dedicated to Sikh emperor founder only a few steps away from Jallianwala Bagh.
