SURKANDA DEVI TEMPLE - DHANAULTI (UTTRAKHAND)

Surkanda Devi Temple is a famous shrine located near Kaddukhal ,24 Kms from the town of Chamba and 40 kms from Mussoorie. Devotees from all over the world pay their visit here in the holy shrine of Surkanda Devi Ji this temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth located all over the Indian Subcontinent and is dedicated to Goddess Surkanda - a manifestation of feminine divine. This temple is famous for its architectural beauty and it's location perched at an altitude of 2,700 meters that offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding region along with the snowy Himalayan peaks. 

Flowers of varied kinds and indigenous herbs are grown in abundance here and some of the beautiful birds of the western Himalayas are also found in the neighborhood. Surkanda Devi Temple demands a trek of about 2km trek from the village of Kaddukhal the treking path is well paved and takes about 30 minutes from one way. Tourists can also reach the temple by walking along an 8 km trek path amid the dense forest from dhanaulti.

Surrounding by soaring Garhwal Himalayan mountains, view of the Rishikesh and Dehradun Valley, among other natural sun-dries, you are in for a treat in the hills.

MYTHOLOGY OF SURKANDA DEVI TEMPLE

According to the Legend, the origins of the Surkanda Devi Temple can be attributed to Goddess Sati, wife of Lord Shiva who is immolated himself in her father Daksha's sacrifice when he embarrassed Lord Shiva by not inviting the couple to the Yajna. Enraged by the death of Sati, Shiva wandered all over the region and performed Tandav. Lord Vishnu uses his Sudarshana to destroy the corpse of Sati and piece of her fell a over the region, which is known as Sakti peeth.
